With such a wide range of villas for sale in the Portimao area and the fact that you are considering spending hundreds of thousands of euros on a property, take care not to fall too much in love with the Algarve and jump in without feeling confident that you have fully researched the area and have defined your needs. For example do you want to be within walking distance of the golf course? Do you really want to be right in the lively resort of Praia da Rocha or will you want a bit of peace and quiet eventually? Do you want to be able to walk to the nearest shop to get a loaf of bread or are you happy to drive everywhere? If you are planning to up sticks and move here permanently take care not to buy a villa which is too isolated and cuts you off from the outside world. These few examples are on top of the basic parameters of number of bedrooms and bathrooms required and do you want your own swimming pool!
If you look at the estate agents section on this website you will see there are a range of professionals to choose from who have extensive local knowledge and experience to help you in your quest. Be sure to be very clear on what you want for your money against what you can actually get and be prepared to negotiate hard as often sellers put too high a price on their properties in the hope they will sell to a buyer who has not done their homework and is making an emotional purchase rather than a realistic one.
Take time to explore the area and drive
round making notes of any developer’s signs and private for sale boards
so that you have the complete range of options available to you. Also make
sure that you get the local newspaper and scour the property columns for any
private sales as when negotiating direct you can often effect a fair and speedy
deal.
